Child, Family, and Community: Family-Centered Early Care and Education, 5/E by Janet Gonzalez-Mena

List Price: $55.19

The fifth edition of Child, Family, and Community: Family-Centered Early Care and Education includes a number of significant changes, including an altered title and a shift in focus.  It is written to the reader directly from the author and discusses socialization and education of young children in home, child care, and educational contexts from birth to 8 years old.  The shift in focus (a) puts working with families in early care and education settings in the spotlight as the central theme and includes more strategies and practical advice in every chapter about how early childhood professionals do that, (b) places more emphasis on Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory of development, explaining the environmental influences on children to help early childhood professionals understand children's behavior and learning, and (c) extends the age range  to also cover school-age children.

As before, the book examines developmental theory and adds diverse perspectives from a base of solid academics, constructivist theory, and the author's own experience.  Students find this text to be very readable and written at an accessible level.
